Rigid posture (dystonia)

Dystonia is the movement disorder where sustained muscle contractions lead to stiffness and abnormal postures.

Try this:

  1. Try a massage
  2. Use warm towels or a heating pad on the stiff muscles
  3. Taking deep, regular breaths to help relax
  4. See if you can detect a trigger that causes the stiffness to start or worsen and then reduce or eliminate that trigger
  5. Get some exercise each day, if possible
  6. Consider a physical therapist who might be able to help with exercise
  7. Try giving your loved one some tonic water – it contains quinine, muscle relaxant
  8. Talk to your doctor about medical options
