Impact of Donepezil Treatment on Memory and Attention in Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Official Study Title Cholinergic Modulation of Top-Down Visual Processing in Individuals With Mild Cognitive Impairment
Conditions Studied Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
Intervention Donepezil
Purpose This is a research study designed to better understand the impact of manipulating the cholinergic system on memory and attention processes in individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). It will involve 3 months of treatment with donepezil or placebo and 3 functional MRI scans at UC Berkeley (at study onset, one month and three months after the onset).
Eligibility  
Inclusion Criteria Over 55 years of age, cognitive complaints, decline in abilities over last several years, objective signs of cognitive impairment, willingness to have three functional MRI scans over three months, willingness to be in a blinded study in which they may take three months of placebo
Exclusion Criteria Any neurological disease including dementia, current treatment with AD meds, anything that excludes MRI (e.g., claustrophobia, metal in body)
What is Involved?  
Testing Battery of neuropsychological tests and fMRI at UC Berkeley
Frequency of Visits 3 visits: start of study, one month and then at three months
