Outreach & Support

Introduction
Collaboration and outreach is one of our missions at the UCSF Memory and Aging
Center. Our staff of neurologists, neuropsychologists, nurses and pharmacists
are involved in outreach to our local community and beyond.
We have established formal outreach programs,
such as with Self-Help for the Elderly,
HD Support Group and
FTD Support Group. We
are also in the process of setting up additional programs within
San Francisco.
Another important aspect of our outreach efforts involves education
and training of health care professionals as well as community
groups, including the following:
- Consultations, education and lectures for various organizations
and professional associations
- Training of students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and psychiatry
Self-Help for the Elderly
(SHE)
The UCSF Memory and Aging Center provides cognitive and behavioral evaluation
and diagnosis in collaboration with Self-Help for the Elderly (SHE), an adult
day health program for Chinese elders, located in San Francisco. The evaluations
are conducted on-site at the SHE adult day program on a monthly basis.
The staff at SHE identify clients in need of evaluation. A physician,
neuropsychologist, and nurse from the Memory and Aging Center conduct
medical/neurological, cognitive, and family assessments. The Memory
and Aging team serve as a resource for the client's primary physician
and other health care providers.
Frontotemporal
Dementia (FTD) Support Group
The UCSF Frontotemporal Dementia Support Group is designed to provide support
and education to the families of people with FTD, Progressive Supranuclear
Palsy (PSP) and similar neurodegenerative diseases. This support group specifically
addresses the needs of FTD caregivers whose concerns are often different than
those of Alzheimer's disease caregivers. The format is informal with open discussion
as well as occasional speakers. Caregivers and family members of UCSF and non-UCSF
FTD patients are invited to attend. There is also a simultaneous
Memories in the Making Art Program for individuals with dementing illnesses. For more information on both of
these groups, visit our Events for Caregivers section.
Huntington's
Disease (HD) Support Group
The Huntington's Disease support group
welcomes affected individuals, family members, at-risk individuals,
loved ones, friends and caregivers. The group is designed to offer
support and education in a caring, safe and relaxed environment.
Guest speakers are sometimes invited to share their knowledge of
medical management, research and resources. For more information,
visit our Events for Caregivers section.
